j. cole - lights, please
9.28.2009 @ 11:55 PM
J. Cole released his second offical mixtape, The Warm Up on June, 15, 2009. After hearing that mixtape Jay-Z signed J. Cole to become the first artist to be signed to his new label Roc Nation. The song that caught Jay's ear was Lights, Please. He also appeared on Jay-Z's album The Blueprint 3 on a track titled "A Star Is Born". And he will be opening on Jay's tour. He will be in Toronto, October 31st, 2009, and incredibly enough, we will literally have the chance to be 'witnesses' to a star being born. Dope!

"To be in the same category with great people of great talent is amazing. But, my mission statement is to change things and make shit better. I want to make music that inspires motherfuckers to feel like they are me, that they can do what they want if they believe in themselves. I don't know another artist that makes music with that type of motivation."
- Kid Cudi
Definitely 2 of my favourite tracks of that new Kid Cudi album, 'Man On The Moon: The End Of The Day'. For sure some inspirational shit right here. The album is in stores September 15, 2009. Make sure to cop the album ya heard?!
"i've got some issues that nobody can see and all of these emotions are pourin' outta me i bring them to the light for you it's only right this is the soundtrack to my life the soundtrack to me life, ohhh"
First single off Ms. Lewis' LP titled "Echo" produced by Ryan Tedder. You all might know Ryan from the pop group One Republic, but he was also the producer of Leona's smash hit "Bleeding Love". I'm just saying, you put these together and you should get smashing success. This ain't no "Bleeding Love", but I'm sure it'll do just fine. Keep your eyes out for "Echo" in stores November 16th 2009.
“I already heard people are trying to hate like he wasn’t important, like he wasn’t a dope DJ. Let me tell you something…he is the f–kin’ shit. This dudes’s a f–kin’ maniac on turntables, for real. You have to experience this dude’s tactics on turntables, he’s sick with it. And if I cosign it, f–k any DJ who disagrees. You either haven’t seen him spin…and this dude’s history, his knowledge of music was intense…Ive known this dude for over 15 years so I bear witness to seeing him get busy. So any DJ that feel different, f–k y’all, man, y’all don’t know the dude, and I know him. So f–k all of y’all, f–k you.”

Understand, that Drake is not the best rapper we have ever seen. Nor is he the best rapper out right now (That goes to Eminem, Hov, Wayne and 'Ye). But he definitely is the rapper, with all the attention. Often times, when you get all the attention, you get confused to be in the above categories: Claiming to be the best rapper of all time, or even the best rapper out. This isn't what makes Drake so hyped, and so interesting. What makes Drake so intriguing, and what I believe his greatest achievement, is his ability to capture the fear of flying.
'Fear of Flying': The fears associated with the pursuit of and attainment of 'success'
Really listen to 'So Far Gone' and you'll understand that this is not a mixtape. It's a 'free album'. There was a precise theme, and emotion expressed throughout the album, and the theme is about the fears and pressures one faces chasing that ever elusive goal: 'Success'. Drake communicates this mood incredibly precise, and most of all honestly. Drake brings a level of honesty and humility in his raps--that's what makes him different. Not his 'lyricism', 'style', 'collabos'...these are all just surface matters. At the heart of his music, is a genuine fear of success...he wants it so bad that he acknowledges the price of failure is high. This acknowledgement of 'failure' is what is truly missing from hip hop today.
Not only is it missing, it gets covered up--with 'bling' talk, 'hoe stories', and 'gat em up bragging'...at the end of the day we know about the uncertainty the record industry is facing and we know, that very few of these artists really have the resources to ball out the way they say they do, as often as they do--so where's the honesty? No one acknowledges being afraid anymore.
As a person on the quest for success, is why I feel Drake. It takes a special breed of people to understand the fear that comes along with putting yourself and your idea out on the line. None of us are idiots--we don't put out our vision with an ignorance of failure, to do so would lead to failure.
We find successes be honestly acknowledging our failures, and planning to overcome them. How do we do that?
"I never cried when 'Pac died But I prolly will when Hov does And if my tears hold value then I will drop one for every single thing he showed us --and I'll be standing in a puddle I stay away from niggas that can land me in some trouble and I'ma keep it honest I'm so tired of being subtle it's just me 40, O and Neeks Standing in a Huddle... Staring at the members of my team who get questioned bout their profit from this million dollar scheme Just know that I'm in debt to you for defending all our dreams"

Here goes the only new track off the re-issue of Drizzy's mixtape 'So Far Gone' EP produced by DJ Khalil. In stores September 15th, 2009.
Fresh-faced suburban white kid loves hip-hop, goes off to pursue higher education and makes mixtapes on the side, lands major-label record deal before graduation. The Asher Roth Story? Au contraire! Well, actually, it is the “I Love College” rapper’s tale, in a nutshell, but it’s also Mike Posner’s, too. The 21-year-old Southfield, Michigan, native is about to start his senior year at Duke University, where he majors in business and sociology and possibly beer pong (yep, he’s a frat boy); he’s also got a newly-minted contract with J Records a division of Sony, collaborations with Kid Cudi, Ye's protege Big Sean, and Wale under his Abercrombie belt, and an official debut due out sometime in 2010– as well as another mixtape to follow his first, 2008’s A Matter of Time. Vocally, he also sounds a little bit like if Macy Gray and Jason Mraz had a baby. Whether or not his voice or lyrical skills will carry him far remains to be seen. However it is rumored that Posner will be featured on the new Lupe album, which is definitely a step in the right direction. Good lucks to him, definitely dope, and definitely on the way up. Holla @ ya boy!. (That's me!)

See all i wanna do is be RELEVANT,
Just tell me that i ever meant anything MORE,
That you could ever see me and you in another light,
But its like the dark women indoors in the darkest nights by the wrong man,
mostly all of them have made you incapable of a first IMPRESSION,
what it do is i channel my aggression with no cable or antenna,
Just intentions to impress you. If capable.
Hoping that the material possessions can materialise to a BETTER you,
Cars, nothing i drive can drive you out of this state of mind,
For such an ugly picture and,
MONEY, nothing i buy can buy more time for your ears to tell your heart to listen to it,
DIAMONDS, a girls best friend is what they say but believe me with the right allegience shorty you gonna SHINE anyways,
and everyday that goes by is a couple more lines in her diary,
the day before is better than the present,
so anyone presented in his presence is doing these life sentences,
theres no key for release,
no reason to be around,
her mind in the clouds,
she writes it all down,
in her diary.
