aaliyah is dope.
8.25.2009 @ 11:49 PM

Personally, I hate constructing posts like these. But on the same accord, it brings me one of the greatest joys. Since the vast majority of us will never become close acquaintances to our favorite artists, let alone meet them, their music acts as our lone bond of friendship. I remember exactly what I was doing on August 25, 2001. A normal day it was, indeed. I had cut grass about two hours earlier and the rest of my day was dedicated to doing absolutely nothing. This was around the time AOL was the main source of internet entertainment and instant messenger seemed light years ahead of its time. Around six that evening, I received an IM from a friend asking if the ‘Aaliyah dying in a plane crash’ rumor was true.

I turned to BET. Nothing was there. I turned to Much Music. Nothing was there either. Almost near the completion of typing my message, “hell naw, that’s some bullshit,” the confirmation flashed across the screen. It was surreal, actually. Aaliyah was never my favorite artist, but I’d be a fool to say she wasn’t leagues beyond amazing. Like most other teenage boys at the time (and even to this day), I had the biggest crush on her. She was beautiful and seductive, but not whorish. Talented, but not cocky. Quiet, but full of potential. And in one fateful plane ride, it was over. It didn’t seem fair then, and it doesn’t seem fair eight years later. More than likely it never will, but that is the most disgustingly beautiful thing about life, you don’t know. You just don’t know.

As with most other celebrity passings, her death has increased the interest and value in her life tenfold. With production of a biopic on her life supposedly in motion, only time will tell if her silver screen representation will do justice what her physical managed to capture while here on Earth. Also, it is amazing to see the impact she had on the R&B landscape, specifically the female subgenre. Before Beyoncé and Alicia Keys became true household names, Aaliyah Dana Haughton held the top spot. In death, she even helped influence the styles of artists like Ashanti, Ciara, Rihanna, Cassie and more.

In song, Tupac once asked the question, “How Long Will They Mourn Me?” and not even he knew the real answer. The solution is rather simple when you analyze it. They (the fans) will mourn you as long as your work continues to resonate with them. If Aaliyah’s creative resumé is any proof, the answer could very well be until the end of time.

"We're not remembering your death, we're celebrating your life."
R.I.P. Aaliyah Dana Haughton (January 16, 1979 – August 25, 2001)

Unlearn
People often ask me the craziest part about becoming "famous" and I've never had an answer until yesterday.

"You'll spend half of your time defending yourself and the other half trying to stay sane resulting in you being forced to find time to be creative"

I often wonder in a time where new artists exist in a impersonal cyber world of instantaneous information, if we will ever have another rap legend that can manage to maintain the image that our idols had prior to this method of promotion. I am not suggesting that this person should be me, I am just urging a generation to understand that in order to have anyone of any significance in our lives that we can look up to there will be things that we must look past. There are people that buy sell and trade evil on a daily basis...when u believe in their brand is when they win.

"Even photoshop couldn't change me"

I also want people to know that I am only releasing this EP so that everyone involved in the project can hold a physical copy of the CD in their hands and see it in the store. And for anybody else who feels that So Far Gone marked a moment in time I just wanted to give you the option to have the disc. If you got it for free and want to keep it that way than by all means I urge you too. That was a gift from me to you...Thank Me Later.

j. dilla is dope.
8.14.2009 @ 1:03 AM

In his brief 32 years the legendary J. Dilla, otherwise known as Jay-Dee or James Yancey created and shaped a new sound for Hip-Hop that inspired beat boxers, MCs and music lovers around the globe. With an incredible line of production credits for De La Soul, Tribe Called Quest, Erykah Badu, The Pharcyde, Janet Jackson, Busta Rhymes, Common, D’Angelo, his own crew Slum Village and so many more it is little wonder that J-Dilla has been described as a visionary, a genius & the quintessential producers’ producer by some of the most respected names in the game. The fact that both Pharell Williams & Kanye West name him as their major inspiration speaks volumes to the influence of his distinctive “Dilla sound”. I am proud to say J. Dilla changed music, hip hop & my life forever. I have been a hardcore Dilla fan for years and I can't think of any other artist that was able to touch me with music like he did. J. Dilla is dope.

Listen: Common feat. Erykah Badu - The Light (Jay Dee Remix) (audio)
Listen: Janet Jackson - Got Till It's Gone (Jay Dee Remix) (audio)

With the recent passing of Slum Village member Baatin, we at Motivation and our partner Mick Boogie wanted to pay tribute to one of Detroit’s finest hip hop groups ever. The Slumdog t-shirt is done in classic Run DMC styling, but we flipped the iconic logo to stand for Slum Village. Proceeds from the sale of this t-shirt will be donated directly to the families of Baatin & J Dilla.

I see quiet a few bloggers write about this track as if it’s all about Lupe and who the hell is Jack Splash. Tell you what; if you don’t know about Jack Splash you are missing out on one of those great behind the scenes of music characters. He is a producer extraordinaire and front man (I’ll still say he is behind the scenes) in the amazing band PlantLife. It's not just the fans showing Plantlife love. Since the release of the band's debut album, The Return of Jack Splash, last year, fellow musicians and reviewers have been united in their praise. Pharrell Williams is a fan, as is the underground MC Mos Def, while some reviews have compared them favourably with Outkast. Splash is unfazed by the hype. His new album, Technology And Love Might Save Us All…, is slated to drop this fall from J Records. This track right here, is definitely dope!

8.06.2009 @ 9:22 PM

“Welcome to Hollywood, everybody who comes to Hollywood got a dream, what’s your dream?”
Those are the opening lines to the famous Julie Robert’s movie ‘Pretty Woman’ but words that are all too familiar to one British singer.
Meet rising music star Lolene.
Taking her love of classic throw back artists and modern day pop gives Lolene’s songs a style of their own. Her sound is an eclectic fusion of kitsch fun with elements and sounds from both sides of the Atlantic. Coining the term Awkward POP, Lolene cites Madonna, Prince and Gwen Stefani as artists that have had a major influence on her unique sound.
“My music is mainstream but with kooky elements that separate me from your average pop bitch. It appeals to anyone that has ever loved or who wants to have a good time - its like the love boat, hop on,” explains Lolene.
"Sexy People" is the delicious first track and video from her highly anticipated debut album The Electrick Hotel, set to be released on Capitol/EMI Records early 2010.

With that I welcome you to the wonderful world of Lolene …one you’ll be familiar with in no time!

Angels and Demons
This bottle of Opus One is low but my spirits are high my friends. I am about 2 hours away from Toronto, CA where I will be spending the next chunk of time recovering from a surgery that I now must have. I embarked on this tour with a torn ACL, MCL, and LCL and due to the events that happened the other night lord only knows what other damage I have done. On the bright side I will begin the reflecting and soul searching that its going to take to make this album and my outfit on the night I fell was crack. I will forever push myself beyond the limits despite advice and recommendations given because even with this new found success I am still the kid who wanted this more than anything in the world. Its funny when I read comments from previous fans who have lost interest because of the radio play and exposure I have. I just want to assure anyone reading that nothing has changed on my end. I refuse to get comfortable, I refuse to fall in line and follow anyone elses formulas. I still work as if So Far Gone had never dropped and I’m still trying to figure out how I’m going to gain entry to this game.

“Missing someone gets easier everyday. Because, even though it is one day further from the last time you saw each other, it is one day closer to the next time you will”

See you soon.

Drizzy

8.02.2009 @ 6:54 PM

On April 11 Red Bull Big Tune made the leap from bass pumping clubs to the living rooms of 340,000 music fans during its American television debut on the BET network. The 30-minute TV show chronicled the adventures of 16 up-and-coming music producers as they embark on the final battle to determine once and for all who has ‘the big tune’ and who will walk away with the coveted title of Red Bull Big Tune Champion and a chance to collaborate with a well-known recording artist in Red Bull Studios.
When the final battle ended the crowd determined that the producer with ‘the big tune’ and the ultimate winner of the competition was 17-year-old Charles ‘C-Sick’ Dumazer of Chicago, Ill. In the time immediately following the final battle, C-Sick had a lot to contemplate. Who would he select to work with in the studio? After some deliberation he selected Def Jam recording artist Nas, one of hip-hop’s most profound lyrical poets. Nas is well known for his 1994 debut album Illmatic, which many consider to be one of the greatest hip-hop albums of all time. His upcoming tour and album with Damian Marley has many on the edge of their seats.
